5 Vikings players that have been underwhelming this summer
By Nik Edlund
Nate Stanley – QB
Heading into the 2021 season, it was unclear how the Vikings quarterback depth chart would shake out. They obviously had Kirk Cousins as their top option, and when they selected Kellen Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, it was clear he’d be the backup.
The question was who would be the third quarterback and the one keeping his NFL dreams alive on the Vikings’ practice squad. Nate Stanley and Jake Browning were seen as neck and neck when it came to that competition and who would win that battle would be determined in the preseason.
August is more than halfway through and this is no longer a contest. Stanley has fallen way behind Browning and is even behind Danny Etling on the depth chart who has been in purple for only a couple of weeks now.
Nate Stanley just isn’t getting the reps. He missed a large portion of time due to COVID protocols and that has set him far behind. We barely hear anything about him in any reports from practice and it appears he’s been sitting out again recently with an undisclosed injury.
There’s no chance that Stanley beats out Browning, and if his NFL career is going to continue, it will have to be with another team unless he has a miracle turnaround in the next couple of weeks.
