Tight End No. 3

The training camp battle for the Vikings’ third tight end job was expected to be a very heavily contested one. Brandon Dillon was the veteran who would be battling a sixth-round rookie with freakish size in Zach Davidson, and former undrafted player Shane Zylstra.

Dillon had flashed in the past during the preseason, and his big games surprisingly secured him a spot on the team. Davidson was coming off a head-turning performance in mini-camp, and Zylstra was coming in with solid bloodlines, and great hands and size.

As the preseason has progressed, no one has stepped up to be the man behind Irv Smith Jr. and Tyler Conklin. Davidson has had some brutal drops and Dillon also has had a case of slippery mitts. Zylstra has been extremely quiet, but he has had some solid performances in practice lately and could be closing the gap.

The Vikings will likely go with one of these three to be the third tight end on their depth chart, as opposed to looking for someone who is let go from a different team. It’s just frustrating and unfortunate that no one has risen up to claim this spot on the roster.
