Minnesota’s linebackers will be helped by their pass rush
The Vikings hinted at some bad news when co-defensive coordinator Adam Zimmer expressed concern over Anthony Barr’s status for Week 1. While the Vikings are not required to disclose the injury until the first week of the season, Zimmer’s comments made it sound like they’re not expecting their pro bowl linebacker to be ready for the season.
“I can’t tell you if he’s going to be ready Week 1 or not,” Zimmer said. “He’s doing everything he can rehab-wise to get back in there. Hopefully, we have him Week 1. If not, we’ll have somebody step in and play.”
That somebody will either be Nick Vigil or Troy Dye. Vigil looked impressive in his short time against the Colts, recording a pass breakup on his first snap. While Dye also had his moments, his pick-six in the second quarter may reveal the formula for how the Vikings can get by without Barr.
If the Vikings’ defensive line can generate pressure, it should make the linebackers’ job easier. That didn’t happen a year ago and it resulted in the worst defense Mike Zimmer has ever had. If the defensive line shows up on Friday, it should allow the Vikings to let Barr take his time to recover.
