Patrick Peterson signing with the Vikings this year was a surprise to just about everyone other than Peterson himself.

Minnesota didn’t think they had a shot to land the All-Pro cornerback in free agency this past offseason. But Peterson actually sought out the Vikings and wanted to play for Mike Zimmer.

So far this season, Peterson has easily been the best cornerback on Minnesota’s roster, and he’s performing much better than he did during his final two years with the Arizona Cardinals. While this is good news for the Vikings right now, the fact that he’s performing at such a high level is only going to make it even tougher for the team to re-sign the veteran corner in 2022.

Peterson only signed a one-year deal with Minnesota worth $8 million, so he will hit free agency again after this season. If he’s able to continue playing well once he returns to the field from his current hamstring injury, he will likely be looking for a lucrative multi-year contract in 2022, which is something the Vikings probably won’t be able to offer him.
