Could Vikings lure Kyle Fuller back to the NFC North?
By Randy Smith
With the Minnesota Vikings stuck between a rock and a hard place with cornerback depth, should they make a play for Kyle Fuller before the trade deadline?
The Minnesota Vikings recently suffered a blow to their cornerback depth when they placed Patrick Peterson on injured reserve. While the Vikings have corner depth behind Peterson in Cameron Dantzler, Bashaud Breeland, and Mackensie Alexander, another acquisition wouldn’t hurt.
The other acquisition Minnesota could pursue is Denver Broncos cornerback, Kyle Fuller. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport recently listed Fuller as a possible trade candidate heading into this year’s deadline on November 2. A former NFC North rival, playing seven years for the Chicago Bears, Fuller could be headed out of his new team as well.
While cap concerns would be an issue for the Vikings, as Fuller currently carries a cap hit of almost $9.5 million, the Broncos could elect to keep some of Fuller’s salary, or Minnesota could also offer a cap casualty in return. Additionally, after recently trading defensive end Stephen Weatherly to Denver, the Vikings could elect to call the Broncos once again to see if business could be done once more.
What Kyle Fuller could bring to the Minnesota Vikings
The biggest selling point of Fuller to Minnesota would be depth. Arguably, the Vikings need it at the cornerback position.
While Breeland has improved from the season’s start, it’s hard to say how long that streak could last and whether the Breeland of old could pop back up again or not.
Dantzler, by far, has the best PFF grade of any of the previously mentioned corners behind Peterson on the depth chart. But will he be put up to the test as he’s slated to be put back in the starting lineup? A first since last year.
Lastly, if there’s any head coach to pair Fuller with, Mike Zimmer would be the one. The proclaimed “DB Guru” would love additional depth at a banged-up position.
With Minnesota slated to face Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, and Aaron Rodgers during the next four weeks, the secondary will be vital for a Vikings victory in each matchup. Depth is important, and Minnesota could obtain it should they decide to make a trade for Fuller.
