Trade for Warren Moon in 1994

During the last 30 years, the Vikings haven’t had much success when it’s come to drafting and developing their own quarterbacks. Instead, a bunch of Minnesota’s best seasons during the recent past have been with a starting signal-caller that wasn’t originally drafted by the Vikings.

After spending the 1993 campaign with a declining Jim McMahon as their starting quarterback, Minnesota decided to trade for a passer that could give their offense some actual firepower. The Vikings sent a 1994 fourth-round draft pick and a 1995 third-round draft selection to the Houston Oilers in exchange for quarterback Warren Moon.

Moon’s first year with Minnesota in 1994 wasn’t very impressive, but the team still ended up making the playoffs. Then in the 1995 season, the veteran quarterback put up some great numbers (4,228 yards and 33 touchdowns), but the Vikings went on to miss the playoffs.

In Moon’s third and final year with Minnesota, he only appeared in eight games after suffering a broken collarbone.

When the Vikings made a trade for the Hall of Fame quarterback in 1994, they were probably hoping he would help lead the team to more than just one appearance in the playoffs. But that didn’t happen and it’s difficult to not view Moon’s tenure with the Vikings as anything other than disappointing.
