3 most disappointing Vikings in their win over the Chargers
By Nik Edlund
Oli Udoh – RG
Oli Udoh started the season off hot but has since cooled off and his performance against the Chargers was another sub-par performance. Udoh was again a flag magnet drawing plenty of penalties and moving the Vikings backward and in a hole to start drives. He was repeatedly called for holding calls which tells a lot about where he’s at as a player.
If Udoh has to constantly hold, it means he’s getting beat by the man he’s supposed to be blocking. He either isn’t strong enough to anchor against the behemoth’s crashing down on him or he isn’t quick enough to get the jump on his man to win the leverage battle. Whatever it is, this has become a pattern and not a trend, which shows he has some major flaws in his technique.
It is time for the Vikings to go another route at right guard. They have young Wyatt Davis waiting in the wings, and while it is curious why he is rarely active, he really can’t be much worse than what Udoh has been showing in recent weeks. Davis is supposed to have the strength to anchor and be a road grader type, and if the Vikings don’t make a change soon, Udoh will continue to be a hindrance to this offense.
