Seeing C.J. Ham on this list might cause a few members of the Vikings fan base to freak out a bit. But the reality is that Ham plays a position that is nearing extinction in the NFL.

He’s great for what Minnesota currently likes to do on offense as he helps create big holes for Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison to run through. He’s also become a safety net in the passing game when Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins needs to get the ball out of his hands.

However, if Minnesota brings in a new coaching staff in 2022 that wants to install a more modern offensive scheme, then there’s a good chance that Ham could be let go.

The Vikings fullback will still have two years left on his current contract after the current season comes to a close (expires in 2024). But Minnesota can release Ham next year and create almost $2 million in cap space.

Keeping the veteran fullback (and Duluth, Minnesota native) around in 2022 is something that a good amount of Vikings fans would like to see happen. But there’s no sense in keeping him on the roster next year if a new Minnesota coaching staff doesn’t have a role for him in their offense.
