Baker Mayfield took some significant steps backward in his fourth season with the Cleveland Browns. However, Mayfield was also dealing with the effects of a shoulder injury for the majority of the 2021 campaign.
So some might look at the Browns quarterback and think there is absolutely no reason for the Vikings to consider trading for him if they move on from Kirk Cousins. But Mayfield isn’t that far removed from a 2020 season that saw him generate a 95.9 passer rating after throwing 26 touchdowns, just eight interceptions, and more than 3,500 yards.
The 2020 campaign proved that an offense can utilize him to their advantage, and at his age, he should still be able to perform like that season once again in the future.
The thing with Mayfield that makes him an even more intriguing trade option is his contract. Currently, his deal is set to expire in 2023, meaning if Minnesota isn’t satisfied with what he is able to do in 2022, they can just move on from him after a year.
