Michael Pierce – DT

Cap Savings: $6.5 million

After sitting out the 2020 season due to COVID-19 health concerns, there was an enormous sense of intrigue surrounding what Michael Pierce could bring to the defensive front. The interior lineman enjoyed a fantastic stint with the Baltimore Ravens and the addition of Dalvin Tomlinson meant hopes were high for this tandem to do some real damage before competitive action began.

Tomlinson held up his end of the bargain with a solid first campaign following his arrival from the New York Giants. Although it went relatively overlooked, Pierce also emerged from the season with some credit despite playing just eight games thanks to injury.

The Vikings now have a big decision to make regarding Pierce, who will count $10.5 million against the cap on the penulimate year of his deal. There could be a scenario where those in power release him, but they should try and get something back for the lineman first if this is the avenue they choose to go down.

Trading Pierce before June 1 saves the Vikings around $6.5 million, according to Over the Cap. That might not seem like much, but the organization needs to cut their spending and this could sway the team’s decision provding there is suitable interest from elsewhere.

Had Pierce been able to play a full season, it’s a different conversation. However, that was simply not the case and his lack of involvement indicates he’s overpaid in 2022.
