Cap Savings: $2.54 million

As stated previously, the Vikings need to not only get under the salary-cap, but the franchise also needs to free up enough space for the new decision-makers to bring in personnel they think can help the team trend in a positive direction. This will not be easy by any stretch of the imagination, but there are some ways it can be accomplished based on previous cap manipulation across the league.

Exploring some possible trades for draft capital is also something that will be discussed. Armon Watts had some nice moments in 2021 and could be of interest to some teams looking for defensive line depth if this cannot be acquired during the frenzied free agency period.

Watts deserves a great deal of credit for emerging from a sixth-round pick into a key rotational role. At 26 years old, the defensive tackle has more upside than perhaps an aging veteran and there is every chance he could get even better with additional responsibility on his shoulders elsewhere.

Trading Watts does seem unlikely given his status and the fact he’s goes so far under the radar. The $2.54 million saving with this move isn’t going to move many mountains, so it would have to be an offer Minnesota feels is possibly above market value.

Much will depend on how the new faces view Watts and what happens to Michael Pierce. But it would be a surprise if he wasn’t on the roster heading into training camp.
