Kellen Mond

2021 Team:

  • Minnesota Vikings

2021 Stats (in 1 game):

  • 66.7 percent completion rate
  • 5 passing yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions

Using the 2021 season to form any sort of opinion on Kellen Mond’s chances to succeed in the NFL seems pretty foolish.

Knowing what we know now about the demise of the relationship between Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman, Mond really didn’t stand a chance to make any significant amount of progress in his development during his first season with the Vikings.

Now, Minnesota has a new head coach in Kevin O’Connell who will be placing a heavy emphasis on helping the quarterbacks on his roster as much as possible. This is great news for Mond, who will get to experience what life is like to have a head coach that actually wants him to succeed.

Mond seems like a longshot to be the Vikings’ starter for the 2022 season. But O’Connell was able to help the Los Angeles Rams win 10 games in 2020 with Jared Goff starting under center for the majority of the year. The same Goff who was the 31st-ranked quarterback by PFF last season.

So O’Connell and his staff are likely going to be able to get the most out of whoever ends up as Minnesota’s starting signal-caller for the 2022 campaign. If the Vikings trade Kirk Cousins this year, Mond taking his place as the team’s starter for at least one season is something that shouldn’t be completely ruled out.
