Vikings GM says ‘Kirk will do what’s best for Kirk’ this offseason
By Adam Patrick
Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah spoke about quarterback Kirk Cousins on Tuesday at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine.
On Tuesday, we had the opportunity to hear from new Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah when he took the podium at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine. To no one’s surprise, Adofo-Mensah was asked about Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and what lies ahead for the team’s starting signal-caller.
Minnesota’s new general manager gave some pretty general answers to the questions he was asked about Cousins while he was at the podium, praising the quarterback’s skills and other nice compliments to keep his trade value high.
But after Adofo-Mensah was done at the podium on Tuesday, he continued to answer questions from reporters. That’s when he provided some thoughts on Cousins that didn’t feature a bunch of fluff.
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah says “everything’s in play” for Kirk Cousins and the rest of the Minnesota Vikings roster
Following his press conference at the Scouting Combine on Tuesday, Adofo-Mensah revealed to Sports Illustrated’s Will Ragatz and others that the Vikings have been having discussions with Cousins’ agent about the quarterback’s future.
"“Those conversations are ongoing and I can’t tell you anything at this moment, but we will communicate and we will do whatever’s best for the Minnesota Vikings and Kirk will do what’s best for Kirk. But I think there’s a lot of middle ground for us to work well together.”"
Minnesota’s general manager went on to add that the future of just about everyone on the team’s roster is up in the air at this point in the offseason, including Cousins.
"“Everything’s in play and I hate to be that general, but everything’s in play with every player.”"
With degrees from Princeton and Stanford, Adofo-Mensah is a very intelligent person. So he knows that it would be the opposite of smart to sign Cousins to a lucrative extension that could keep the Vikings in salary cap purgatory for the next few years.
Adofo-Mensah also knows that bashing Cousins at the podium or not sounding like the team is still interested in committing to the quarterback isn’t going to benefit Minnesota either.
One thing for sure is that we will probably be finding out very soon what the Vikings will be doing with Cousins as the new league year will begin on March 15 and Minnesota still needs to clear more than $16 million to get under the salary cap.
