His offensive philosophy is simple
He started out by talking about the “marriage of the run and the pass” but simplified that a bit to add that it means “doing a lot of things to make it hard on a defense but make it easy for us” on offense.
O’Connell continued by talking about “the illusion of complexity” and how disguising plays and keeping opposing defenses on their heels can lead to offensive successes based on personnel groups, formations, motions, shifts, tempo changes, and more.
Ball security was also stressed by O’Connell. Not turning over the football while running hard and executing pass plays is the key to having a balanced attack that keeps drives alive and results in points on the board.
Situational football was included in this conversation and that is a situation where the Vikings struggled. Putting together drives at the end of the half or game as well as time management including playcalling and time-outs were also issues under the previous regime.
