7 free-agent quarterbacks the Vikings could sign in 2022
Dwayne Haskins
2021 Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Dwayne Haskins is an interesting case study. The former first-round pick out of Ohio State spent time with new Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell when the two were in Washington.
While things did not work out for Haskins in Washington (they don’t for most quarterbacks who play there) he did show enough promise in Pittsburgh during the 2021 preseason that the team placed the Restricted Free-Agent tender on him to keep him on their roster going into 2022.
The move places Haskins’ value at $2.5 million as well as a first-round pick should the Vikings choose to match that offer to bring in another familiar face to the quarterback room in 2022. A hefty price for a backup quarterback, meaning that any team who matches that offer shows a serious investment in Haskins for the long term.
Bringing in Haskins as a backup would strengthen the Vikings roster by creating depth at the quarterback position as well as bringing in someone who shares familiarity with O’Connell as Cousins does.
Haskins showed flashes in the 2021 preseason with the Steelers, throwing for 161 yards and a touchdown with a passer rating of 108.3 in a 24-16 comeback victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The RFA investment from the Steelers shows the belief in his progress and the chance he may even take over the mantle left behind by Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement.
