Vikings are not likely to contend in 2022

Perhaps the biggest reason the Vikings should trade Kirk Cousins outside of the financial factor is where the organization stands right now. The talent is there, and they could rebound under Kevin O’Connell, but this is a team that’s missed the playoffs over the last two seasons and majorly underachieved along the way.

The Aaron Rodgers news cannot be overlooked, either.

Had he left the Green Bay Packers, then the Vikings could have kept Cousins and gone all-in on wrestling back the NFC North crown, but that didn’t turn out to be the case. With Rodgers set to take a team-friendly deal and Davante Adams also getting the franchise tag, it’s highly unlikely Minnesota will dethrone their fierce rivals in 2022.

That’s why getting a tremendous deal for Cousins from another team could stabilize the franchise. It should also allow the front office to start planning on potentially getting an option under center that can push Rodgers all the way before he eventually hangs it up.

Cousins has always been something of a divisive figure who probably gets more criticism than is due. However, this is a real crossroads point for the Vikings, and it’s absolutely vital they get this call absolutely spot on regarding the most important position on the field.
