What the Vikings can expect from new LB Za’Darius Smith in 2022

The Good
A proven pass rusher
There is no question that Za’Darius Smith can get to opposing quarterbacks. In his last 33 games, Smith has 26 sacks as part of his 29 tackles for a loss and 60 quarterback hits. Those numbers are hugely impressive for an individual.
He never achieved double-digit sacks until arriving in Green Bay in 2019 and really came out of his shell as part of the Packers defense. He can be counted on to create pressure without needing to manufacture it schematically.
Scheme versatile
Smith has been excellent as an outside linebacker in Baltimore and Green Bay. However, the Vikings are expected to use a hybrid scheme that includes both 4-3 and 3-4 looks to keep opposing offenses guessing.
The ability to line up as a defensive end or a stand-up linebacker will be a huge benefit for Minnesota as their new-look defense attempts to find their identity. Locking him down for three years allows him to grow and develop within the new system.
Reuniting with former coaches
According to Vikings.com, outside linebackers/pass rush specialist Mike Smith and assistant head coach Mike Pettine “stood on the table to get this player here and they couldn’t be more excited about having him here” in a quote from new head coach Kevin O’Connell. Both coaches spent time with Smith previously and likely have plans for him in purple and gold.
