There is still interest from the Minnesota Vikings in bringing back former Pro Bowl defensive back Patrick Peterson for the 2022 NFL season.

The Minnesota Vikings have been working hard this offseason to build a team to compete with the best in the NFL for the 2022 NFL season. They have been active in free agency, signing a linebacker, edge rusher, defensive tackle, and offensive lineman along with bringing back the team’s specialists.

One area that hasn’t been addressed yet is the defensive backs. The Vikings are very thin at cornerback since Patrick Peterson, Bashaud Breeland and Mackensie Alexander are all free agents. This makes it likely the team will use a top pick in the draft on the position but could still use some more talent on the roster.

According to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press on Twitter, there is still some interest for Minnesota to bring Patrick Peterson back to the team, but it might not be as simple as it could be to get him under contract.

Here is that tweet:

Why should the Minnesota Vikings want Patrick Peterson back?

Patrick Peterson has shown interest in re-signing, but he might not be the player he was during his glory days with the Cardinals, but he is still a highly respected cornerback who could bring experience to the team and help the younger players on the roster grow and develop.

He could step in as a starter until another defender is ready to step into a starting role. At the moment, Cameron Dantzler and Harrison Hand or Kris Boyd are penciled in as the team’s starters but that should change before Week 1 rolls around.

Peterson didn’t grade out well by Pro Football Focus, earning a grade of 63.0 for the 2021 season while allowing 37 receptions on 64 targets. Even with those disappointing numbers, Peterson looked good at times and his reputation seemed to lead opposing quarterbacks into not throwing the ball in his direction.

The major question comes with his salary. The Vikings aren’t likely to spend $10M to bring him back this season and the well-known defender is likely to command a large price tag. Finding a middle ground where both sides can be happy will be a challenge, but not an impossible task.
