What have the Vikings done in 2022?

Thus far in free agency, the Vikings have been in the mix for several proven right guards. Although they missed out on pretty much all of their top choices, their activity is worth noting. They want to get better in the trenches to protect their quarterback after watching him get eaten alive for four seasons.

They missed out on Brandon Scherff, Austin Corbett, and Connor Williams. Minnesota even failed to secure Andrew Norwell, Brian Allen, and Mark Glowinski. While J.C. Tretter is still out there, the Vikings seem to be out of the mix for any of the starting-caliber interior linemen that hit the market this spring.

In desperation, the Vikings reached out to Ryan Bates, who chose to accept an offer from the Bears before the Bills matched the offer sheet. Once again, the Vikings tried but came up short, even for a swing player that can start but should not be given the job from Day 1.

Now, the Vikings are about to head into the NFL Draft with a slew of backup-caliber guards that will not change the landscape of the offensive line. Oli Udoh, Wyatt Davis, and Jesse Davis are the top contenders to fix a glaring hole, and that is certainly not good for the Vikings.

Even adding players who are not that good is a sign that Davis may be worse than we all thought or wanted to believe. The fact that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah sought Davis to be his starting right guard tells me all I need to know about Davis.

Just a year after being a third-round pick by the Vikings, Davis is fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster unless he proves himself in camp. His sophomore training camp and minicamp will give fans a firm look into his development.
