Football Outsiders recently shared some information that revealed the Minnesota Vikings have been one of the most mediocre teams in NFL history.
During their history as an NFL franchise, the Minnesota Vikings have managed to appear in a Super Bowl four different times. However, the Vikings were never able to come out with a victory in any of these four matchups, and they are currently one of 12 teams in league history to never win a Super Bowl.
Despite being unable to reach the top of the NFL mountain, Minnesota has never really been a bottom dweller. Instead, they typically hover around the middle of the league and occasionally have themselves an impressive or embarrassing season.
So it’s not very surprising to see that the Vikings were included in a group of teams compiled by Football Outsiders that have been labeled dynasties of mediocrity.
Few teams in NFL history have hovered around the middle as much as the Minnesota Vikings
By using several factors, Football Outsiders recently put together a list of the most average dynasties in NFL history.
The top spot on the list went to the Pittsburgh Steelers teams from 1949 to 1961 and the first time Minnesota showed up on the ranking actually didn’t happen until the No. 17 slot, which is where the Vikings teams from 1991 to 1997 were placed.
Despite not having one of their average dynasties rank among the top 10, Minnesota appeared on this list four different times. Once for the 1991-1997 seasons, behind that were the Vikings teams from 1978 to 1987, then came the stretch of Minnesota’s history from 2003 to 2007, and, unfortunately, the current Vikings have qualified for this list since the start of the 2014 season.
Coincidentally, each of the two teams that Kirk Cousins has started games for since he entered the NFL in 2012 appear on this list (Washington from 2015-2021 and Minnesota from 2014-2021).
Hopefully, the Vikings can put an end to their current dynasty of mediocrity in the near future, either with a championship or with a decision to completely start from scratch.
