What are some potential starting quarterback options for the Minnesota Vikings in 2023 if Kirk Cousins regresses?
Watching the quarterback carousel around the NFL this offseason has been nothing short of extraordinary. Elite players have been traded, Aaron Rodgers decided to remain with the Green Bay Packers, risks were taken in free agency, and there was also the Tom Brady retirement that lasted a few short weeks before he went back on his original decision for one more go-around with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Minnesota Vikings were not without speculation of their own before opting to extend Kirk Cousins rather than trade the veteran signal-caller. This provides the new powers that be with some stability as they look to make an immediate impact, which was part of their retool and not rebuild mentality.
What transpires throughout the upcoming campaign will have significant ramifications on what happens beyond that. Cousins might have another year on his contract, but he still needs to perform well to avoid the rumor mill swirling once again next time around.
With that being said, here are five potential starting quarterback options for the Vikings in 2023.
Quarterback No. 1
Kellen Mond
This one would take some convincing. Kellen Mond was selected by the Vikings last year but rarely featured even as a backup, which is a big indicator of how much work the quarterback needs to do in pursuit of eventually becoming an NFL starter at some stage.
Mond had a lot of likable traits coming out of Texas A&M. So it was surprising not to see him backing up Kirk Cousins throughout his rookie campaign.
With a new coaching staff coming into the fold who weren’t around when Mond was drafted, it remains to be seen whether or not the signal-caller can convince Kevin O’Connell and others that he is worthy of starting consideration in 2023.
