Minnesota Vikings hired Ed Donatell

Mike Zimmer ruled the defensive side of things throughout his stint with the Minnesota Vikings. Now that the long-standing head coach is no longer around, it was important that the new regime brought in the right guy to ensure momentum started trending in the right direction next season.

The Vikings appointed Ed Donatell as the team’s new defensive coordinator. He is a vastly experienced figure that held the same position on the Denver Broncos over the last three seasons and secured a tremendous amount of success along the way.

Donatell’s arrival is set to come with a big change. The coordinator likes to implement a 3-4 defensive scheme and although this might come with a slight period of adjustment, Minnesota has the personnel in place to not only make this switch but thrive in such a scheme.

This has been further bolstered by some outstanding acquisitions on defense such as Jordan Hicks and Za’Darius Smith. If the Vikings can acquire a talented safety and cornerback from the draft, it will only improve Donatell’s options during a critical first campaign with the franchise.

Coaching hires rarely get top exposure in the media. But make no mistake, Donatell could be one of Minnesota’s best offseason moves.
