Sure, the Vikings could roll into the 2022 season with their current group of cornerbacks which includes Patrick Peterson, Cameron Dantzler, and Chandon Sullivan. But this selection of Trent McDuffie is more about the future of the cornerback position if anything else.
The adjustment from college to the NFL is typically very difficult for a corner to make and it usually takes a year or two for them to get up to speed (See Trae Waynes and Mackensie Alexander).
McDuffie is one of the top cornerbacks in this year’s draft pool. He has the size to line up in the slot, but he spent the majority of his time on the outside during his college career.
It might not be the most exciting selection the Vikings could make with their first-round pick this year, but McDuffie has the potential to be a staple in the team’s secondary for a long time.
