Alexander Mattison – RB

Admittedly, the Vikings moving on from Alexander Mattison before the start of the 2022 season would be a big surprise. However, the possibility of it actually happening became a little more believable after the 2022 NFL Draft.

With a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, Minnesota decided to select former North Carolina running back Ty Chandler. Adding Chandler is a bit puzzling considering the Vikings already have Mattison, Dalvin Cook, and Kene Nwangwu on the roster. But if Minnesota is looking to part with Mattison or Nwangwu this year, the pick of Chandler makes a lot more sense.

With Chandler having exceptional speed (4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash), some might think Nwangwu’s job could be in danger. However, Nwangwu has already proven to be an elite kick returner, and his abilities on special teams would probably give him the edge over Mattison.

In all likelihood, Chandler will probably end up on the Vikings’ practice squad next season, and Mattison will remain on the team’s roster. But if Minnesota is going to make a surprise cut this offseason, this is the position group to keep an eye on.
