Vikings kicking competition might have just come to an end

On Friday, the Minnesota Vikings waived undrafted rookie kicker Gabe Brkic, leaving Greg Joseph as the only kicker left on the team’s current roster.
Heading into the team’s spring practices, new Minnesota Vikings special teams coordinator Matt Daniels revealed that there was going to be a competition to find who would end begin the 2022 season as the team’s kicker and punter.
The battles were between the two specialists who were on Minnesota’s 2021 roster, kicker Greg Joseph and punter Jordan Berry, and two undrafted rookies looking to make an NFL roster, kicker Gabe Brkic and punter Ryan Wright.
Well, on Friday, one of these battles might have come to an end as the Vikings decided to waive Brkic. The move leaves Joseph as the lone kicker on Minnesota’s roster as the team heads into training camp this summer.
Will the Minnesota Vikings bring in another kicker to compete with Greg Joseph?
Last month, Daniels stated that “competition makes us better,” which is why they brought in Brkic and Wright in the first place. So it wouldn’t be surprising at all if the Vikings added another kicker to compete with Joseph before the start of training camp in July.
There aren’t a ton of options for Minnesota to choose from, however, when it comes to signing a new kicker before training camp. Guys like Michael Badgley, Sam Ficken, Chase McLaughlin, Chris Blewitt, and Matt Ammendola are some of the most notable kickers who are currently available in free agency right now.
The Vikings could also wait until teams make their final cuts before the 2022 regular season begins and grab someone to compete with Joseph or stash on their practice squad.
For now though, Joseph’s job with Minnesota appears to be safe. He’s coming off of a 2021 season where he made 86.8 percent of his field-goal attempts, including 7-of-9 from at least 50 yards away.
