Marcus Sherels, punt return/special teams

Special teams are often overlooked part of the team, but they can make or break a game. At the moment, the Minnesota Vikings have a great kickoff returner in Kene Nwangwu but haven’t found someone yet to return punts.

It will likely be an open competition in training camp for the job, but it sure would be nice to have one of the best punt returners in Minnesota history to handle the duties and bring the unit back to being one of the most dangerous in the league.

There is no knock on the players on the roster who are competing for the job, but it would be hard not to fill a glaring hole on the depth chart with a player the caliber of Marcus Sherels considering how impressive he can be in that phase of the game.

Sherels owns seven franchise records for the Vikings including single-season punt return average, most punt return yards in a game, most punt return touchdowns in a season, most punt return touchdowns in a career, and tying for most special teams touchdowns in franchise history.
