Hiring Wes Phillips as Offensive Coordinator

Last season, the Minnesota Vikings make the questionable decision to let Klint Kubiak, son of former offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, take the reigns of the offense under head coach Mike Zimmer. That experiment wasn’t very successful, and the purple and gold struggled to move the ball on numerous occasions.

Kevin O’Connell got a lot of attention when he joined the Vikings after winning the Super Bowl as the offensive coordinator for the Rams. O’Connell has a vision for Minnesota’s offense and has entrusted Wes Phillips to engineer and execute the strategy.

Phillips is like Kubiak in the way that football is in their blood. Wes’ dad Wade and his grandfather Bum were both NFL head coaches but the comparisons stop there. Phillips’ background is pass-attack-heavy and should help not only bring out the best in Kirk Cousins but also assist in moving the chains instead of grinding out games.

His experience working with so many parts of the offense will be key in unlocking the team’s full potential. Plus, prior experience working with Kirk Cousins in Washington should be another huge benefit. He has helped to create stars at tight end in his experience, making this another year where hype should be high for Irv Smith Jr.
