Rookies drafted on Day 3 typically have fewer expectations than those drafted higher up the pecking order. They are drafted more in hope than anything else, although some do end up emerging as key contributors right out of the gate depending on their fit and how well they translate to the next level.

The Vikings picked up promising running back Ty Chandler in the fifth round, but this is a strong positional group with Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison at the top-end of the depth chart.

This obviously makes things difficult for Chandler to make an immediate impression on the rotation. There is also the presence of Kene Nwangwu to factor into the equation.

Chandler has some nice athletic traits and took the eye for North Carolina last season en route to 1,092 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. The player can also provide assistance in the passing game when called upon, which the Vikings are expected to do a little more in Kevin O’Connell’s scheme.

There’s been a lot to like about Chandler’s start during offseason workouts according to reports. But what comes next in training camp will be pivotal to his short and potentially long-term aspirations.
