5 emergency QB options if the Vikings lose Kirk Cousins to injury in 2022
By Adam Carlson
The free-agent option: Cam Newton
The first three quarterbacks on this list don’t offer a lot in terms of success in the NFL. Between all three of them, they have accumulated zero wins as a starter and have thrown one touchdown. That won’t cut it if a team wants to be confident in their backup.
On the exact opposite end of that spectrum is Cam Newton. Newton is a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback who was named MVP of the league in 2015 and Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011. His past success speaks for itself on his resume.
Sadly, Newton has fallen from grace a bit since those glory days. Last year, he started five games for the Panthers where he threw four touchdowns compared to five interceptions and completed only 54.8 percent of his passes while making only $6M for the year.
Although Cam shouldn’t be considered a starter in the league anymore, he would be a capable backup that could get a team as talented as the Minnesota Vikings a few wins if they had to be without Kirk Cousins.
Other free-agent options like Mike Glennon and A.J. McCarron just can’t stack up against the past success and ceiling fans have seen from Newton..
