Tight End

Tight end is definitely the shakiest position for the 2022 Vikings. They have Irv Smith Jr. at the top of the depth chart, who can’t put together a complete season. The guy has been ready to bust out, but that hasn’t been able to happen as he is prone to injury.

He’s coming off a knee injury and Minnesota is sure to work him in gingerly in the lineup. If he does stay healthy, that breakout season could finally happen but if he gets hurt again, then this is where the concern emerges.

The depth behind Smith is simply not good. Ben Ellefson is a blocking tight end who isn’t one that will be a factor in the passing game. Johnny Mundt was brought over from L.A., but his best season in the league was when he caught four passes for 53 yards back in 2020.

Behind those two are a couple of young bucks in Zach Davidson and Nick Muse. Davidson looked lost and out of his league during the preseason last year, and Muse is a seventh-round pick who is a long shot to make the squad.

If Mundt, Davidson, and Muse all struggle early in camp the Vikings will realize they need a veteran boost to their tight end stable. That could come in the form of a familiar face in Kyle Rudolph or maybe an experienced outside veteran like Eric Ebron.
