Quarterback

The Vikings are set with Kirk Cousins topping the depth chart. He’s coming off a season where he threw for over 4,000 yards in a run-heavy offense, featuring a head coach who was clearly not a fan of his work.

Things will be different this year. Cousins will have 100 percent backing from Kevin O’Connell who worked with him in Washington, and the team will be airing out the ball much more frequently than in years past.

Cousins should have an excellent season, but what happens if he gets injured? Minnesota is rolling the dice with their backup quarterbacks, Sean Mannion and Kellen Mond.

We have all seen what Mannion brings to the table and it is nothing. Supposedly, the team likes to keep him around because Cousins likes him and he is allegedly good at helping him see things in defenses. Whether or not that is true, one thing that can’t be denied is that if he gets on the field, Minnesota will have next to no passing attack.

Mond has only seen a couple of meaningful snaps, and while he possesses upside, the Vikings simply don’t know what they have in this kid. He could end up being great, or he could prove Mike Zimmer right, and we will all feel the way about him as that crotchety old man did.

If Cousins goes down early in the preseason, Minnesota could test the free-agent waters for an experienced quarterback. There isn’t much available, but maybe they could convince Ryan Fitzpatrick to come out of retirement and join his 18th team or pray that Cam Newton has one more competent season left in his bones.
