#2: Players can’t adjust to the new defensive scheme

Change isn’t always a good thing. While it will be refreshing to see the Minnesota Vikings do something different on the defensive side of the ball, that’s no guarantee that it will be successful in striking fear into the hearts of opponents.

New defensive coordinator Ed Donatell will have his hands full during training camp and the preseason while he attempts to install the new 3-4 front and prepare returning players for the responsibilities of their new roles.

Some defenders could take some serious lumps while working in the new scheme. Edge rushers moving from starting on the line to standing up on the outside might be a difficult transition as well as responsibilities for veterans like linebackers or safeties who have played in a 4-3 for all of their NFL career.

Make no mistake that the team will take some lumps on defense as they adjust to the new scheme and responsibilities, but if they struggle really badly and allow a lot of points, that could be disastrous for the team this season.
