Minnesota will keep four running backs

If there’s one thing we can conclude about the Zimmer regime, it’s that they loved to run the ball. While some would point to this as a problem, the bigger issue was their lack of creativity on the ground.

This shouldn’t be an issue under O’Connell, who spent part of OTAs giving Dalvin Cook reps at receiver. If you’re expecting this to translate into a Christian McCaffrey or Marshall Faulk role, you might be disappointed, but the goal is to get Cook in space and create opportunities for his teammates.

Consider a package where Alexander Mattison stays in the backfield and Cook is out wide. Or think of Kene Nwangwu and his 4.3-second 40-yard dash time, used on a wide receiver screen. Even fifth-round pick Ty Chandler could have a role, giving the defense plenty to think about on each play.

These examples should create “The Illusion of Complexity” that O’Connell used during his time with the Los Angeles Rams. Using one look and running a completely different play, it should trick defenses and help the Vikings’ offense become more explosive on the ground while giving all four backs a sizeable role in the offense.
