4 Vikings entering the last chance saloon in 2022 training camp
By Dean Jones
Kellen Mond – QB
This might be a little harsh on Kellen Mond after just one year with the Vikings. But circumstances outside of his control mean that the quarterback will be under the microscope more than most during the team’s upcoming training camp.
The Vikings drafted Mond in the third round last spring with a view to him potentially becoming their long-term successor to Kirk Cousins. Things didn’t go according to plan in Year 1 and the Texas A&M product fell out of favor with head coach Mike Zimmer. So the arrival of Kevin O’Connell represents a fresh start for the signal-caller and one he must take advantage of.
Minnesota covered their bases in the event Mond cannot impress. They signed Sean Mannion to compete for the primary backup job, and if he beats out the second-year-pro, his future with the franchise will undoubtedly take a huge hit.
The new regime has no emotional attachment to Mond. If they feel like better alternatives are out there – especially in the 2023 draft – those in power won’t hesitate to pull the trigger.
Mond has potential, even if it’s been a rough ride so far. Nobody knows for sure just how good he can or cannot be at this juncture, but we’ll probably find out much more during his time on the field in preseason contests.
And make no mistake, Mond must shine brighter than he ever has before.
