Will the offense utilize a fullback?

The Vikings have a deep running back corps that is loaded with talent. In fact, it may be impossible to find a better running back stable in the NFL from top to bottom. Kevin O’Connell hopefully will utilize all these talented backs, keeping Dalvin Cook as healthy and fresh as possible.

O’Connell’s offense will use these backs in various ways and may have more than one on the field at the same time. It will be exciting to see them get plenty of work and used in a creative fashion, but one back we may not see as much of is C.J. Ham.

There’s no doubt about how talented a player Ham is. The guy is a beast at blocking and opening up holes, he has surprisingly soft hands, and he can carry the ball in short-yardage situations with great success. He is also a special teams demon and perhaps the best pure football player on Minnesota’s entire roster.

The question that comes up is will this offense even use a fullback? O’Connell comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree and the offense they ran with the Los Angeles Rams didn’t use a fullback. The Rams didn’t even roster one a season ago.

So will O’Connell tweak things to create a role for this Pro Bowl fullback, or will Ham’s days with the Vikings be over?

Ham’s fate with Minnesota may actually be out of his hands as his skill set may just not be something that this offense needs.

The Vikings could still keep him as an emergency back and special teamer, but it could also come down to a numbers game, and Ham could be looked at as a dinosaur who doesn’t fit the team’s new modern offense.
