Vikings kicker off to a scorching hot start in training camp

Heading into his second season with the franchise, Minnesota Vikings kicker Greg Joseph has been nearly perfect during training camp this summer.

Kickers and the Minnesota Vikings are like oil and vinegar. They just don’t mix well together, and they never have. This year, however, Vikings kicker Greg Joseph will be looking to change that.

Joseph is currently in the middle of his second training camp with Minnesota after winning the kicking job last summer. After a bit of a rough start for the Vikings last season that included missing a potential game-winning field goal in Week 2, Joseph cooled down and he ended up making 33 of his 38 field goal tries.

His performance was clearly good enough for Minnesota’s new regime, as they brought him back earlier this offseason on a one-year deal. So far this summer, re-signing Joseph has proven to be the right decision for the Vikings.

On Monday, new Minnesota special teams coach Matt Daniels spoke very highly of Joseph as the kicker is off to a hot start in training camp this summer.

"“I’ll put it on record right now and say that I firmly believe that Greg Joseph will have his best year [of his career] this year. I’ll put it out there right now. I’m sure of it.”"

Daniels also mentioned on Monday that Joseph has only missed two of the 35 kicks he’s attempted in this year’s training camp. For those trying to do the math, that’s a success rate of over 94 percent.

If Joseph can go out and have the best performance of his career in 2022 like Daniels believes he can, then that would be a huge relief for the Vikings. Minnesota already has plenty to worry about heading into the upcoming season, so it would be greatly appreciated by the team and the fan base if kicking wasn’t a problem this year for the first time in a long time.
