4 Vikings players that have disappointed so far in training camp
By Nik Edlund
Kellen Mond – QB
The majority of the Vikings’ starting spots are already set in stone. The jobs up for grabs during camp this year are at backup spots. None of these backup spots are more important than the quarterback position and that is where one of the better battles in camp this season is brewing.
Second-year man Kellen Mond is trying to take the job from crusty veteran Sean Mannion. Mannion is a favorite of Kirk Cousins and while he doesn’t bring much while on the field, apparently he is quite adept at reading defenses and passing along what he sees to Cousins.
Mond at least provides hope for this team, not only as a potential starter down the road but to be a competent backup who can actually come in and lead this team to some victories if Cousins is out for an extended period of time. There are many in the organization rooting for this kid to beat out the veteran.
So far Mond’s performance in training camp has been mixed at best. He apparently is slow in his decision-making and has been high on his ball placement. He even let a snap go through his hands at one point. To be fair, Mond is basically a rookie and he’ll have some growing pains. However, he needs to start being more consistent if he’s going to win the backup quarterback job and give the Vikings a hint he could be their quarterback of the future.
