5 early surprises from Vikings training camp
By Adam Carlson
One anticipated camp battle is over
The Minnesota Vikings were prepared to go into training camp with an open competition at kicker. They signed Oklahoma kicker Gabe Brkic as an undrafted free agent to a three-year deal that should have put some stress on the returning Greg Joseph.
Strangely, Brkic wasn’t long for Minnesota and was quickly released. He was signed by the Green Bay Packers after his exit, leaving Greg Joseph as the only kicker on the roster heading into training camp.
At the moment, this move looks genius. Joseph has had an amazing training camp, showcasing his accuracy and leg. In fact, on Wednesday, he went 8-for-8 on kicks including a 58-yarder that soared through the uprights.
If the Minnesota Vikings can have a confident, accurate version of Greg Joseph for the 2022 NFL season, there is little doubt the team could view him as a long-term option and provide some stability to a position where they have struggled to have consistency in recent history.
