3-4 defensive end (left side)
Switching to a 3-4 defense under Ed Donatell is something that will be watched with a keen eye next season. The personnel is there to ensure this change goes off without a hitch, but some problem areas could emerge if things don’t click into place right away.
One position that could end up being a weak link is the 3-4 defensive end situated on the left-hand side. The Minnesota Vikings boast two outstanding veterans on their front in the form of Harrison Phillips and Dalvin Tomlinson, but what the team is planning at the other position is up for debate.
Depending on which depth chart you look at, Jaylen Twyman or Armon Watts will be tasked with filing the position. Not exactly the biggest confidence boost for a defense that cannot have doubts in this key area.
Twyman missed all of last season after suffering gunshot wounds. The Pittsburgh product looks tailormade for a 3-4 defense, but whether he can immediately make his presence felt is another matter.
Watts has been a solid if not spectacular performer. But he needs to pick up how to play the position quickly in the coming weeks if those in power feel like he’d be a better option initially.
The second level looks exceptional. However, what transpires in front of Danielle Hunter, Jordan Hicks, Eric Kendricks, and Za’Darius Smith will be of critical importance.
