D.J. Wonnum – OLB

The only reason D.J. Wonnum should really make this roster is if the coaching staff firmly believes he can thrive as a stand-up rusher – and because the depth at the position is pretty disappointing right now.

Wonnum has had some bright moments as a Viking but the consistency as a pass rusher just is not there. He has one strong game a year but disappears for the other 16 and that leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. Wonnum has to prove to be a more consistent winner at the line, even if he rotates in for Danielle Hunter.

Janarius Robinson fits the mold that Minnesota appears to like better than Wonnum right now. He is a more physically gifted rusher that can help in the run game, which Wonnum also leaves a lot to be desired.

I think Wonnum does make the final roster by virtue of having no competition for a backup role but the Vikings should absolutely look into bringing someone else in. A player like K’Lavon Chaisson, a former first-round pick by the Jaguars, is a name to monitor as roster cuts pop up.

If Wonnum does make the roster, that will be a very interesting area of the roster to keep an eye on as the season progresses, especially given the injury concerns of Hunter.
