Chazz Surratt – LB

Chazz Surratt was a third-round pick a season ago who is jockeying for position on the Vikings’ inside linebackers depth chart. The athletic linebacker is battling players like Brain Asamoah, Troy Dye, and Blake Lynch for a job, and when the first unofficial depth chart came out he was listed about fifth on that list.

He had been generating some decent buzz in recent reports from training camp, making plays in the backfield and creating good pressure. His performance versus the Raiders should put an end to any positive vibes surrounding him as he looked lost and confused about who he should be covering.

Not understanding the defense was a big knock on Surratt a season ago and apparently, the new scheme is also confusing to him. What was worse than not knowing his plays or assignments was the fact he gave up on a play.

At some point in the second half, Surratt came charging in and missed the tackle. Instead of chasing down the runner, Surratt just stood there and looked back as other Vikings swooped in and made the tackle. This lack of effort was very disheartening to see and it could be the first domino to fall when it comes to Surratt being let go and forever labeled a Vikings’ draft bust.
