Kellen Mond wins Week 1

Coming into this game, the competition seemed pretty even between Kellen Mond and Sean Mannion to be the team’s backup quarterback. Since Kirk Cousins was out for this game, both quarterbacks got some good opportunities to show off their skills.

Although Mannion had one really nice drive in the second quarter that resulted in a Greg Joseph field goal, he was outplayed by the young quarterback and definitely made the case that he should be the team’s backup.

Mond had a shaky start to the game but ended the game with solid stats. He connected on nine of his 14 pass attempts for 119 yards and two touchdowns, earning a rating of 130.7. Meanwhile, Mannion completed eight of his 12 attempts for 79 yards.

With this performance, Mond should have gained some momentum toward winning his position battle. However, there is still more to learn from practices and the other two preseason games for the Minnesota Vikings.
