Irv Smith Jr. is looking to get back in time for Week 1. But another frustrating injury demonstrated how short the Vikings are of legitimate tight end options.

Letting Tyler Conklin leave in free agency for the New York Jets was a calculated gamble. Although one would be hard-pressed to figure out how the Vikings could have matched the offer he received from the AFC East outfit.

Smith is undoubtedly talented and could have a bounce-back campaign providing there are no further injury complications. It’s just hard to gauge for sure whether that’s possible given his inability to stay on the field lately.

If Maxx Williams isn’t brought forward onto the Arizona Cardinals roster, then the Vikings might look at how he fits into Kevin O’Connell’s system. The former Minnesota Golden Gopher is no stranger to the area and does have some NFL production under his belt that could be of use next season.

Williams could fit himself lower down the pecking order than ever before thanks to the presence of Zach Ertz. The Cardinals also drafted Trey McBride, a second-round selection out of Colorado State that the team has high hopes for.
