Former Vikings draft bust is in need of a new NFL team again
By Adam Patrick
Former Minnesota Vikings offensive guard Wyatt Davis was waived by the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday after just one appearance this season.
Less than two years after he was drafted in the third round, the Minnesota Vikings made the decision to move on from offensive lineman Wyatt Davis when they made their final 2022 roster cuts back in August. Surprisingly, Davis has already had stints with the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints since his departure from the Vikings.
On Tuesday, however, the Saints decided to waive the former Minnesota third-round draft pick. Davis, who was signed by New Orleans right before the start of the regular season, only appeared in one game for the Saints this year. During that one game, he was on the field for a grand total of two snaps.
At one point in his college career, Davis was projected by some to be a future first-round pick in the NFL Draft. But he slipped to the Vikings in the third round in 2021, and now, his career in the NFL already feels like it could be in jeopardy.
Is former Minnesota Vikings guard Wyatt Davis done in the NFL after getting waived by the New Orleans Saints?
Following the decision by New Orleans on Tuesday to waive Davis, the former Minnesota draft pick seems like he’s already running out of chances in the NFL.
During his college career at Ohio State, Davis was a two-time All-American and was the Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2020. For whatever reason, his success on the football field hasn’t been able to continue in the NFL.
Minnesota thought they were getting someone who could quickly emerge as a starter for the interior of their offensive line when they selected Davis in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Instead, the Vikings moved on from him less than two years after drafting him, and two other teams in the league have also decided he wasn’t good enough for their roster.
Since he’s still only 23-years-old, there remains a chance that another NFL team could give him a shot at making their roster. But Davis is certainly running out of time to prove that he belongs in the league, despite getting drafted less than two years ago.
