4 most disappointing Vikings in the win over the Commanders in Week 9
By Nik Edlund
Kevin O’Connell – Head Coach
This one makes me feel a little dirty, and maybe there would’ve been more flack on Kevin O’Connell had the Vikings lost this game, but something needs to be said about the offensive drought the team had in this contest.
The Vikings started off with a beautiful 11-play drive that ended with Justin Jefferson ending his scoreless streak with an amazing catch in the back of the endzone. After that, it was pretty much crickets for this offense until late in the game.
That’s the problem. Minnesota has a ton of weapons on offense and a head coach who is coming from one of the more innovative offensive systems in the NFL. To go nearly three quarters without putting any points on the board is inexcusable. O’Connell gets the blame because he is the one calling and designing the plays.
In O’Connell’s defense, there were some dropped balls by usually sure-handed receivers, but he kept going to a screen game that just wasn’t working all day, and the fact the Vikings didn’t take many shots off the play action is a bit confounding.
All that being said, O’Connell called the right plays when it mattered late, and the Vikings got their seventh win of the season. That’s all that matters in the end, but these extended scoreless streaks with such potent weapons on offense need to get figured out and come to an end.
