No. 1 – History repeating itself

If Cousins were to sign an extension with the Minnesota Vikings, it’s not as if this would be a new scenario for the veteran. After signing his fully guaranteed contract with Minnesota, he’s signed an extension twice. Two of the deals were done with previous general manager Rick Speilman, and one was this past off-season.

While Kwesi-Adofo Mensah and Kevin O’Connell may have someone in mind in the future, the timing may just be right to stick with Cousins going forward. Statistically, and in tenure, Cousins has served the most resemblance of a franchise quarterback since Daunte Culpepper.

After years of draft busts or journeyman quarterbacks, the team has finally found stability in Cousins. His chemistry with the weapons around him, his commitment to the organization, and his desire to end his career as a Viking can only speak volumes of Cousins’ availability to extend.

If the feeling is mutual, then history would repeat itself and Cousins would find himself extending again, most likely on a short-term deal on his current value. Both give each other the option to explore the situation once again sooner rather than later.

This type of relationship hasn’t been held with Cousins before, as he played his franchise tag out in Washington before it became too much for the team to commit to. Now, he has found himself in a position to keep re-signing with one team.

All things considered, it might just make sense to lean into the immediate future with their starter since 2018. After years of mediocrity and failed performances, it might not be time to search for greener pastures.
