4 former Vikings who could become great NFL head coaches one day
By Randy Smith
Terence Newman
A former Minnesota Viking that has ties to coaching already is Terence Newman. Newman, who played cornerback for the team from 2015 to 2017, moved into an assistant coach role for the 2018 season.
Newman had played the majority of his NFL career under former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer, and he decided to try his hand at coaching under his long-time mentor. Newman only spent a season on the team’s coaching staff, and he was even later worked out as a player once more before departing Minnesota entirely.
While he hasn’t had any coaching roles since, his one season of experience and 15-year career as a player could lead him to another coaching opportunity in the future.
Zimmer himself was touted as a defensive back guru, even in his tenure as the Vikings’ head coach. If Newman decided to pursue more coaching opportunities, he could write a similar story.
However, with a lack of work in the coaching field since 2018, it seems that the longtime cornerback might have tried his hand at coaching under Zimmer’s direct guidance and direction. Without a pursuit since, it’s hard to imagine Newman coaching again in the future.
Still, Jeff Saturday’s almost-unprecedented move leaves the possibility of someone offering a chance for Newman to render his coaching services once again.
