Minnesota’s defense is what it is

A lot of people are calling for Vikings’ defensive coordinator Ed Donatell’s head after back-to-back horrendous performances. They allowed 40 points to the Dallas Cowboys, as they couldn’t stop them on the ground or in the air. The defense followed that performance up by allowing over 400 total yards and 26 points to the New England Patriots offense, which is one of the worst in the entire league.

While getting rid of Donatell makes sense since his side of the ball is coming off some horrible games, it’s not going to happen. The Vikings have six games left in the regular season and are 9-2. They are winning games in spite of Donatell’s calls and schemes, and unless they go on a massive losing streak, no change is coming.

So we just have to realize that the Vikings’ defense is what it is. They are going to allow a lot of passing yards to crappy quarterbacks. They’ll let bad offenses move the ball up and down the field and put up points, but when it comes to the fourth quarter and crunch time, they’ll suddenly show up and start making plays.

The good news is that the defense will get a boost in the coming weeks with the returns of Dalvin Tomlinson and Cam Dantzler, but with Donatell still in charge, expect more of the same.
