4 Vikings players who could receive shocking contracts in 2023
By Dean Jones
Alexander Mattison – RB
Dalvin Cook’s ongoing influence on and off the field remains a key component of what the Minnesota Vikings do offensively. They are a more expansive unit these days under head coach Kevin O’Connell, but the Florida State product has a significant role and is thriving once again in 2022, which isn’t surprising based on his career trajectory.
That’s left opportunities relatively limited for Alexander Mattison unless Cook misses time through injury. The primary backup flashes moments of brilliance when called into action, but he’ll always play second fiddle to the team’s No. 1 option if healthy.
Mattison is a free agent in 2023, which represents a good chance for the player to explore potential starting options elsewhere. However, next year’s veteran pool at the position looks incredibly deep, which complicates matters from his perspective.
If Mattison doesn’t get suitable interest and the promise of increased duties somewhere else, then the Vikings might be able to keep him around. Something they should consider, given his familiarity with the scheme and proven credentials when it comes to stepping in at a moment’s notice and contributing.
Again, this might come down to money and Mattison’s role. If a new deal cannot be reached, then expect Minnesota to address this area of need with a talented prospect from the college ranks.
