Danielle Hunter – DE

A contractual dispute between Danielle Hunter and the Vikings was thankfully resolved way before Week 1. The defensive end got a restructured agreement with more money despite missing a considerable part of the last two seasons, but it’s been all positive on the health front this time around, and the LSU product looks back to his old self for good measure.

Hunter has formed an exceptional edge tandem with Za’Darius Smith in Ed Donatell’s 3-4 defensive system. The explosiveness has lost a slight step – which isn’t unexpected for someone that’s missed so much time – but he’s more than making up for this with strong gap discipline and a wide range of pass-rushing moves that can leave opposing linemen in the dust.

What comes from the Vikings season remains to be seen. It’s gone much better than many anticipated in Year 1 of Kevin O’Connell’s tenure, but they might be back to square one where Hunter is concerned in 2023 if recent history is any indication.

The former third-round selection looks to have plenty left in the tank. Hunter will also want additional security to avoid testing the free-agent market in 2024, so a new contract might be something those in power consider if the financial aspect works for all parties.

Hunter’s proven his injury woes are a thing of the past. But if the Vikings decide not to pay him the going rate, then there could be a queue of willing suitors on the trade market for one of the most consistent edge defenders in the business.
